Friday Night Notes: Oklahoma, Texas land 5-star talents from Lone Star State

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school football recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2025 to ’26 and beyond.

It was a big week on the recruiting front as several more of the nation’s top 2025 prospects came off of the board and there were also a few that switched up their college choices.

Oklahoma and Texas each landed five-star prospects and Alabama continued its pedigree as RBU with a commitment the nation’s top 2025 running back. The No. 2 quarterback in the country also put on a scoring clinic in his senior season debut.

Red River Rivalry adds two new five-stars

Oklahoma and Texas arguably had the biggest recruiting wins of the week as both schools landed a pair of elite five-star talents. Offensive tackle Michael Fasusi, the No. 27 player in the 2025 class, announced his commitment to the Sooners on Wednesday. A day later Texas landed a commitment from linebacker Jonah Williams, the nation’s No. 7 player.

Alabama lands nation’s top running back prospect

Oklahoma and Texas weren’t alone in adding elite talent this week. Kalen DeBoer went into Lane Kiffin’s backyard and plucked the nation’s No. 1 running back out of Mississippi. Akylin Dear, a former Ole Miss pledge, announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide on Wednesday choosing Alabama over Mississippi State and Ole Miss.

Tavien St. Clair shines in season debut

Ohio State fans got a glimpse of their future as Tavien St. Clair, the No. 2 player in the 2025 class, led Bellefontaine to a 48-21 season-opening win. St. Clair put up video game-like numbers in the win passing for four touchdowns, rushing for two and accounting for 360 total yards of offense.
