Austin Peay football has the opportunity to shock the college football world in Jeff Faris’ first game as coach.
The Governors travel to Louisville to face the Cardinals Saturday (11 a.m., ACC Network). It will be their first game under Faris, a former assistant at Duke and UCLA who was hired last December after Scotty Walden was hired by UTEP.
APSU is coming off a 9-3 season that included a United Athletic Conference championship and FCS playoff appearance. However, the Govs only return a handful of starters from 2023, as a majority of their key players either graduated or entered the transfer portal following Walden’s departure.
Louisville, in its first season under coach Jeff Brohm, went 10-4 and reached the ACC Championship Game, where it lost to Florida State. Like APSU, the Cardinals were picked to finish fifth in their conference’s preseason poll.
The Govs have one win over an FBS opponent, a 26-22 win at Kansas State in 1987. Last season, they played a closer-than-expected game against Tennessee at Neyland Stadium, leading deep into the second quarter before eventually losing 30-13.
