Auburn Tigers quarterback Payton Thorne (1) throws the ball as Auburn Tigers takes on Alabama A&M Bulldogs at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.
Auburn football moved to 1-0 on the young season last Saturday by rudely welcoming the Alabama A&M Bulldogs to the Plains by the tune of a 73-3 blowout victory.
After putting up 21 points in just under 4 minutes of action to open the game, Auburn put the Bulldogs on a leash for the entire second half, as both head coaches agreed to push the quarters from the normal 15 minutes to a lessened 10 minutes. If not for the shortened game, the Tigers 623 yards of total offense could have been much, much higher.
With 9 offensive touchdowns and a special teams score to boot, Hugh Freeze’s squad had plenty of great plays on both ends of the field to open the season. Here are five that truly defined their win over Alabama A&M.
KeAndre Lambert Smith shows off speed on 67-yard house call
Auburn Tigers wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith (5) celebrates his touchdown catch as Auburn Tigers takes on Alabama A&M Bulldogs at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.
It took Penn State transfer wide receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith about 2 minutes of game action to show the kind of electricity he can bring to the Auburn offense in 2024. After the defense forced a 3-and-out on Alabama A&M’s first drive, the Tigers took over in their own part of the field.
Hugh Freeze and his coaching staff dialed up a deep post concept for their speediest receiving weapon, and the senior from Norfolk, VA went to work on the Bulldogs secondary. After simply outrunning the cornerback, Lambert-Smith hauled in a beautiful, high-arching dime from quarterback Payton Thorne to bypass the safety in stride on his way into the endzone.
