Jets humbled in frustrating 32-19 loss to 49ers

Even without all-pro running back Christian McCaffrey, the 49ers had too much firepower for the Jets’ defense on Monday night as they were able to score on eight consecutive drives in a comfortable 32-19 win.

Deebo Samuel’s two-yard run gave San Francisco a 13-7 lead midway through the second quarter and the 49ers never looked back as they racked up over 400 yards, dominated time of possession and moved the ball up and down the field with Jordan Mason gobbled up 147 yards on the ground.

Jets fans finally got a chance to see Aaron Rodgers in extended action, and he initially looked impressive as he led a long drive to set up Breece Hall’s touchdown to give them an early 7-3 lead.  However, for most of the rest of the game, the Jets looked disjointed on both sides of the ball. By the time Mason had rushed for a five-yard touchdown midway through the third quarter to make it 23-7, the 49ers were outgaining the Jets by 285 yards to 83.

The Jets cut the deficit to 26-13 on Rodgers’ first touchdown pass as a Jet, a 36-yard throw to Allen Lazard, but Jake Moody’s fifth and sixth field goals of the game made it 32-13 before a late Tyrod Taylor pass to Lazard provided the final margin.

Rodgers ended up with 167 passing yards and had one interception on a deflected pass that was thrown slightly behind Garrett Wilson. The much-maligned Lazard actually led the Jets with 89 yards and two scores on six catches, all in the second half.

This game sums up how far the Jets have to go and that it’s going to take some time for everyone to get on the same page. The silver lining is that the 49ers are legitimately one of the league’s best teams, so the Jets have some easier games coming up. They have work to do if they’re to prove capable of competing with the top-level opponents, though.

Here are the key takeaways…

– The Jets had a shaky start on offense, as their first drive ended on a Lazard drop and the second one ended as Rodgers’ first completion as a Jet was…
