Texas A&M’s (2-1, 1-0 SEC) SEC road losing streak has ended, while head coach Mike Elko earned his first conference win as the Aggies defeated Florida (1-2. 0-1 SEC) 33-20 behind redshirt freshman quarterback Marcel Reed’s first career start, coupled with 300-plus rushing yards on the ground.
Just moments before kickoff, it was announced that starting quarterback Conner Weigman would miss the game due to an AC joint (shoulder) issue that he sustained in the loss to Notre Dame to open the 2024 season. Marcel Reed was ready for the moment after playing the entire second half in the win against McNeese State.
Looking poised from the start, Reed’s true duel-threat speed and twitchy athleticism helped move the Aggie offense down the field, mounting a quick 10-0 lead in the first quarter. Dominating at the line of scrimmage, anything twist or stunt Florida threw at the freshman signal caller failed, as Reed’s decision-making was beyond impressive on nearly every snap.
Defensively, A&M held the Gators to 301 yards and only 52 rushing yards while starting safety Bryce Anderson recorded a pick-six in the second half to add to the big lead. Time of possession was the name of the game, as Reed and the offense controlled the ball for 37 minutes.
Ahead of what should be an interesting week, here are five things we learned from Texas A&M’s 33-20 win over Florida.
