Texas A&M’s week 3 SEC road win over Florida could very well define the Aggies’ first season under head coach Mike Elko. Backup quarterback Marcel Reed stepped in for injured starter Conner Weigman with impressive poise, leading to a memorable performance in his first career start.
Reed’s dual-threat running ability opened up the playbook for OC Collin Klein, whose scheme was perfect due to the elite blocking up front. Reed and the Aggie running backs accounted for 300-plus rushing yards for the second consecutive week.
However, this doesn’t mean that Marcel Reed has secured the starting quarterback position going forward. Conner Weigman’s day-to-day shoulder injury will continue to be monitored throughout the week, as Elko updated the media on Monday.
“Conner is going to be listed as day-to-day and week-to-week.”
“We’ll continue to manage the quarterback room in the same manner that we have and play the guy we feel gives us the best chance to win.”
While Reed’s versatility and clear potential provide the Aggie offense a high-risk, high-reward option, it’s fair to say that we haven’t Weigman at his highest level this season because of his injury, making it fair to let things play out once he’s completely healthy.
When asked if a competition between Reed and Weigman would open up when Conner was healthy, the first-year head coach gave the answer all of us in the media should have expected.
“Oh, you know I’m not going to answer that.”
When this weekend’s quarterback decision will be determined by this week’s practice and Weigman’s continued progress.
