Here is where Kansas State football ranks in the US LBM Coaches Poll after loss to BYU

Kansas State football can still lay claim to its national ranking in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll.

Barely.

With a disappointing 38-9 blowout loss to Brigham Young late Saturday night, the Wildcats plummeted 11 spots to hang on by the skin of their teeth Sunday at No. 25.

The good news for the Wildcats is they have an opportunity to solidify their position next weekend when they entertain No. 20 Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. Both teams are 3-1 after dropping their Big 12 openers.

For K-State, which had steadily climbed to No. 14 in the rankings, a disastrous 6 1/2-minute stretch spanning the end of the second quarter and start of the third led to 31 straight BYU points in a massive meltdown in Provo, Utah. The Cougars, incidentally, moved into the Top 25 at No. 22 on the strength of that victory.

Oklahoma State, which dropped five spots, saw its fourth-quarter rally fall short at home in a 22-19 loss to No. 10 Utah.

K-State started at No. 17 in the preseason poll and had moved up a step at a time with victories over Tennessee-Martin, Tulane on the road and Arizona at home in a nonconference battle of Big 12 members.

The addition of BYU again gave the Big 12 five teams in the Top 25, with Utah (4-0) heading the list at No. 10. Iowa State (3-0) moved up two spots to No. 19 with a 52-7 blowout of Arkansas State.
