WESTFIELD – On the rainy, early autumn day, St. Jospeh-Metuchen quarterback Justin Scaramuzzo recalled some of the media preseason predictions.
“We were overlooked a lot,” the junior said, “and some projections we were picked last in the division. We were predicted 3-7 and that fuels a team and that fueled us for sure. We weren’t going to let that be true.”
How did they take the prognostications?
“It got sent right to our football group chat,” he said with a smile.

Yes, those summer question marks with several new starters and young players seem like a million years ago.
Saturday, the Falcons beat Westfield 35-16 to clinch the Big Central Conference American Gold Division title.
St. Joseph (4-0 overall, 3-0 in division) had already beaten Elizabeth and Union. The Falcons topped non-division Ridge in the opener, which helped get it state-ranked at No. 18 entering this week.
Saturday, Westfield led 3-0 after the first quarter, but St. Joes showed why it’s so good and took a 35-3 lead into the fourth quarter.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” St. Joseph coach Bill Tracy said. “I’m really happy for them. They got the division today against a great program on the road. … They worked hard in the summer. I was glad to see them get rewarded for all their hard work – so far.”
One of those question marks – which seems silly, now – was Scaramuzzo, taking over at quarterback after sitting being Daniel DeGennaro. Tracy called him “a winner.”
