MANHATTAN — Kansas State football quarterback Avery Johnson already had produced some highlight-reel moments in his young college career, but on Saturday against Oklahoma State he took it a step further.
In just his sixth career start, Johnson bounced back from a shaky outing the week before to turn in his best performance yet in the Wildcats’ impressive 42-20 victory, and it drew national attention.
With the Wildcats in need of a bounce-back performance following a blowout loss at Brigham Young, Johnson accounted for five touchdowns, completing 19 of 31 passes for career highs of 259 yards and three scores. He also reached the end zone twice with his legs, rushing for 60 yards on just five carries.
For his effort, Johnson was named Big 12 offensive player of the week and Manning Award Star of the Week. He also made the weekly Davey O’Brien Great 8 list.
No. 20-ranked K-State (4-1, 1-1 Big 12) is off this week before traveling to Colorado (4-1, 2-0) on Oct. 12.
