There was just one game featuring two ranked opponents this week so there shouldn’t have been much upheaval right? Well, it was a chaotic Saturday with plenty of upsets to change the balance of the top 25 and our College Football Playoff bracket predictions.
Our top four remain intact: Ohio State, Texas, Miami, and BYU. The top four conference champions get first-round byes. There has to be a Group of 5 representative, too. But there was plenty of change after that with Alabama stunned by unranked Vanderbilt. And that’s just for starters.
1. Ohio State (5-0, 2-0)
It may have been a chaos kind of weekend but the Buckeyes weren’t having any of that and eased past Iowa 35-7 and the only touchdown given up came late. The offense started a bit slow but the defense held Iowa to 226 total yards. Last week: 1. Next: at Oregon on Saturday.
2. Texas (5-0, 1-0)
The Longhorns didn’t play so they had the extra week to prepare for their biggest rival — a game with greater importance now. Last week: 2. Next: vs. Oklahoma (in Dallas) on Saturday.
3. Miami (6-0, 2-0)
The Hurricanes have easily looked like the best ACC team. Then came Cal which has slowly and steadily emerged as a contender under coach Justin Wilcox. The Bears had a 25-point lead. Then all of a sudden they didn’t. Last week: 3. Next: at Louisville on Oct. 19.
4. BYU (5-0, 2-0)
Are the Cougars the best team in the Big 12? The only other team that can lay a claim right now is Iowa State. BYU had a bye this week. Last week: 4. Next: vs. Arizona on Saturday.
5. Oregon (5-0, 2-0)
The Ducks had the spotlight to themselves with a game on Friday and had no trouble with Michigan State, winning 31-10. Oregon led 31-0 before the Spartans scored. It would have been easy to look past this opponent with the big one looming. That didn’t happen. Last week: 6. Next: vs. Ohio State on…
