Penn State vs. USC football: Staff predictions and final score picks

Penn State’s first road game of the season in Big Ten play is here this weekend as the Nittany Lions fly west to face new Big Ten member USC. A week after taking care of UCLA at home behind a strong defensive performance, the Nittany Lions will look for the California Big Ten sweep against a Trojans team coming off a loss at Minnesota. USC has already lost twice in Big Ten play, but both of those games were on the road. Will the home field of the Los Angeles Coliseum be friendlier to the Trojans and give the Nittany Lions some sour moments?

Our staff at Nittany Lions Wire is feeling pretty good about Penn State’s chances this weekend, with the exception of one. Here are our predictions and thoughts about this weekend’s matchup between Penn State and USC.

Brad: The Nittany Lions might not have looked dominant against UCLA, but they were in control that entire game and were able to do the minimal amount to stay undefeated. That should help them when facing USC, a team that doesn’t match up in the trenches against Penn State. The Nittany Lions should dominate the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, running all over the Trojans’ defense with Nick Singleton back while also getting after Miller Moss to disrupt the offense.

Penn State 27, USC 21

Charlie: The trenches and third downs will tell the story of this game. If Miller Moss and the Trojan offense give the ball away they won’t be able to upset Penn State. A slow start for the Nittany Lions could also give USC an edge. I think Penn State’s defense and offensive line will dominate the second half to push Penn State to its strongest win of the year.
