College football Week 9 viewing guide: Mismatch still a grudge match

Lamest time window: The noon slate features some interesting matchups — highlighted by No. 12 Notre Dame at No. 24 Navy — but nothing that screams “must-see.” Just do your chores early so you can settle in for a potentially stirring Saturday night.

Noon: Navy, which lost 43 in a row to the Irish once upon a time (1964-2006), could put a serious dent in Notre Dame’s playoff hopes while fortifying its own in this neutral-site game (New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium) on ABC. Navy is seeking its first 7-0 start since 1978. Elsewhere, new Oklahoma offensive play caller Joe Jon Finley and new quarterback Jackson Arnold get a stern test against No. 18 Ole Miss (ESPN), which ranks 13th nationally in total defense (289.4 yards per game).

3:30: No. 20 Illinois, which seems the quintessential team no one wants to play, travels to top-ranked Oregon (CBS). How will the Ducks handle being a newly-anointed No. 1? And imagine the unrest in Alabama (not to mention the irrational phone-ins to Paul Finebaum) if No. 21 Missouri hands the No. 15 Crimson Tide (ABC) their third loss in four games. Speaking of unrest, the calls for Gus Malzahn’s job will resonate from Sanford to St. Cloud if UCF loses its fifth consecutive game, at home against No. 11 BYU (ESPN).

4:15: No. 5 Texas plays at No. 25 Vanderbilt (SEC Network). Lightning can’t strike twice, can it?

7: On paper, the FSU-Miami game (ESPN) projects as one of the most anticlimactic in series history. Tune in anyway, just for the intensity, historical references and slight possibility the game could go off the rails.

7:30: For quantity, this is the best slot of the night, highlighted by 14th-ranked Texas A&M hosting No. 8 LSU (ABC). Elsewhere, Michigan State can snap its two-game skid against Michigan (Big Ten Network) in a clash of 4-3 rivals, and something tells us to keep…
