Memphis football beat Rice on Friday night to get to 8-2 on the season.
Coach Ryan Silverfield won the game and he also won on another level. Silverfield earned $75,000 for getting his eighth win of the season. He already earned $25,000 for beating a Power Conference team when Memphis beat Florida State earlier this season.
He has the potential to hit an even bigger milestone next Saturday against UAB. Winning that game would give the Tigers nine wins on the year, and that would push Silverfield’s bonus from $75,000 to $100,000. He’d get $25,000 for each win after that, up to 11 (the most the Tigers can still win this season).
The ninth win would also extend Silverfield’s contract an additional year. He signed a new contract in April that includes a clause that will extend his contract by a year any time he reaches nine wins. His pay would also go up by $100,000 any time he reaches nine wins.
Memphis beat Rice 27-20 on Friday night at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium. The Tigers have two regular season games left — home against UAB and at Tulane — and then will play in a bowl game.
There will be another available incentive during the bowl game. Silverfield will earn $25,000 when the Tigers appear in a bowl game, and he’d earn an additional $25,000 if they win it. He’d get an additional $25,000 if the Tigers beat a Power Conference team in a bowl game, like they did last season against Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl.
