South Shore high school football team cancels season early

The Holbrook/Avon co-op high school football team, which has battled declining participation numbers all season, has opted to end its season prematurely.

The Bulldogs (0-6) chose not to participate in either of the two available consolation-game weeks, and they have withdrawn from their Thanksgiving eve matchup with South Shore Tech, ending a yearly tradition that began in 2017.

South Shore Tech now will host Southeastern Regional on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 5 p.m. Southeastern was in need of a holiday opponent after its rivalry with West Bridgewater ended. West Bridgewater will play at East Bridgewater on Wednesday, Nov. 27, at 6 p.m.

Holbrook/Avon had to forfeit its Week 8 game vs. Wareham when its roster size dipped below the level that the coaching staff and administration thought was safe. The Bulldogs regrouped and played in Week 9, losing 34-0 to Cape Cod Tech on Nov. 1, but another wave of injuries finally made them pull the plug.

“We’ve had two more concussions,” coach Fran Cass said. “And then my quarterback (Prince Vital), who’s a two-way starter, was lost, we think, for the season. We didn’t really have a backup quarterback, so my running back, who is out with a concussion (would have had to replace him). When you get to the third-string quarterback and you only have 20 guys (on the roster), it really gets dark quickly and the competitive nature of the game drops fast.”

Cass previously coached Holbrook/Avon from 2005-12. He just returned to the program this season and acknowledged that it was a bit of a “fixer-upper.” The Bulldogs were 4-7 a year ago.

Cass said interest in the team had declined among the remaining players after the Bulldogs had been outscored 220-19 this season. “Their spirits were broken,”…
