In this week’s Swampcast, the Gainesville Sun’s Kevin Brockway and David Whitley wrap of a blockbuster news week involving both Florida football and Florida basketball.
It began with Florida Gators athletic director Scott Stricklin giving head coach Billy Napier a vote of confidence that will result him likely returning for a fourth season at UF despite a 15-19 overall record. A day later, multiple reports revealed that Florida basketball coach Todd Golden was a subject of a Title IX complaint that included allegations of sexual harassment, sexual exploitation, stalking and cyberstalking.
Golden coached Monday night during UF’s 86-62 win over Grambling on Monday night. Whitley canvassed about a half dozen fans for their reactions to the allegations. Golden stood by his statement on social media on Monday night that he’s engaged with a defamation attorney and could not discuss specifics of the investigation.
“They are just having the normal human reactions of what’s happened, what’s going on,” Whitley said. “I wish we knew. We like Todd. We love the Gators. We think he’s got it going well here and it would be terrible if he is guilty of these charges and it would be equally terrible if he’s not guilty and his reputation gets destroyed because of this.”
Brockway said that UF didn’t look distracted on the court Monday night as the Gators rolled to their third straight double-digit win to start the season 3-0.
“Todd had chance to give a flat-out denial, which he did not,” Brockway said. “Obviously he referred to his statement which referred to the defamation lawyer which I can constitute as somewhat of a denial. I thought he was a little jittery up there but he did answer the questions that were posed to him., that didn’t pertain to the investigation but pertained to the overall scope of this situation hanging over his…
