Today is Nov. 14, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, the Longhorns left the state for the first time.
Midway through the 1896 season, Texas recorded a 12-4 win at Tulane. That marked the first time that the UT football team left the state for a game. Texas began playing football in 1893, but its first five road games were all in-state contests.
Under the direction of head coach Harry Robinson, Texas got its money’s worth during this maiden voyage to Louisiana. After playing Tulane in New Orleans on a Saturday, UT visited LSU two days later. The Longhorns were beaten 14-0 by LSU on Nov. 16.
In the 128 years since that trip to Louisiana, Texas has expanded its travel plans. After making its first appearance in Michigan this September, Texas has now played football in 34 different states.
