In a Gallup poll from last month, voters were asked: “In general, are you satisfied or dissatisfied with the way things are going in the United States at this time?”
Satisfied: 26%
Dissatisfied: 72%
No opinion: 2%
If only we could get the fine folks at Gallup to run a similar, albeit slightly less serious, poll here in regards to college football. Ask Oklahoma and Oklahoma State fans this question: “In general, are you satisfied or dissatisfied with the way things are going with your college football program at this time?”
The numbers might look like the ones above. A quarter satisfied (the eternal optimists) and three quarters dissatisfied (a voting bloc ranging from rational minds to fringe lunatics).
In a related poll, numbers would show tanking job approval ratings for Brent Venables and Mike Gundy — the two men leading the Sooners and Cowboys.
OU (5-5, 1-5 SEC) has capsized in its maiden SEC season. OU’s only conference win is against Auburn, also 1-5 in league play. The Sooners need to beat Alabama at home or LSU on the road to make a bowl game. Best of luck.
OSU (3-7, 0-7 Big 12) has been even worse than OU relative to expectations. Picked in the preseason to finish third in the Big 12, the Cowboys are still winless in conference play.
So who has the lower job approval: Venables or Gundy?
In the absence of real polling, I’m going to throw out my best guesses.
Sooners and Cowboys fans, you tell me where I’m too high or too low.
