Why McKenzie QB Tate Surber was told his time as a Mr. Football winner was coming

McKenzie senior quarterback Tate Surber knew growing up that Mr. Football winners were remembered.

Surber recalled seeing Drew Hayes win the award for McKenzie in 2005, then seeing state champion quarterback Jackson Cassidy win the award in 2022 after leading the Rebels to a TSSAA state title.

Now, Surber, a UT Martin football signee, is among those remembered athletes in McKenzie. He was named the Tennessee Titans Mr. Football winner for TSSAA Class 1A during Tuesday’s award luncheon at Nissan Stadium in Nashville.

“It’s extremely special,” Surber said. “Growing up, you always hear about the people (who have won the award) and to be Mr. Football kind of cemented my legacy at McKenzie. Just knowing that’s something that’s going to be around for a long time, it means a lot.”

Surber remembered his sophomore season, seeing Cassidy win Mr. Football and sending Cassidy a congratulatory text message.

Cassidy responded by saying that Surber was going to win the award before his time with the Rebels was over.

“He just saw something in me even before I was the starting quarterback,” Surber said.

In the regular season, Surber totaled 2,885 yards (2,082, 808 rushing) and 46 touchdowns (25 passing, 21 rushing). Surber ended the season with 3,148 passing yards and 36 passing touchdowns with 1,173 rushing yards and 28 touchdowns. Defensively, Surber made 25 tackles from his safety position.

The Rebels (13-1) lost to eventual TSSAA Class 1A state champion, MASE, in the semifinals.

Surber beat out other finalists, Nate Adams (Clay County) and Bennett O’Neal McDougal (Whitwell), for the award.
