Former CU assistant Gibson named head coach at Marshall

Dec. 10—Tony Gibson, who spent two formative years of his college coaching career at Cumberland in the 1990s, will be introduced for his first head coaching job later this week at Marshall University, the school has announced.

Gibson coached defensive backs on Herschel Moore’s CU staff in 1997 and ’98.

Now 52, he broke into Division I coaching at West Virginia in 2001 under his coach at Division II Glenville State, Rich Rodriguez, who brought Gibson with him to Michigan and Arizona over the next decade.

Gibson has also coached at Pittsburgh and a second stint at West Virginia before becoming North Carolina State’s defensive coordinator in 2019.

The West Virginia native replaces Charles Huff, who took the same position at Sun Belt Conference-rival Southern Miss after leading the Thundering Herd to the SBC championship Saturday night. Marshall will face Army in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 28. Gibson, who will work under a six-year contract, will not coach the bowl game.

Back at NC State, the Wolfpack are booked for a Dec. 28 Military Bowl date with East Carolina in Annapolis, Md. Gibson won’t coach in that game, either.
