Notre Dame’s football approach in the transfer portal era: ‘Be opportunistic’

SOUTH BEND — Nine days into the winter transfer portal window, just one Notre Dame football commitment had gone public: Alabama graduate transfer defensive back DeVonta Smith.

The former La Salle High star from Cincinnati, where he was a year ahead of Notre Dame running back Gi’Bran Payne, entered the portal on Dec. 14 and picked the Irish two days later.

While Indiana already had six January transfers (with 194 combined career games) lined up as it prepared for Friday’s College Football Playoff opener at Notre Dame, the Irish’s recruiting office under general manager Chad Bowden and recruiting director Caleb Davis was staying busy.

“It’s kind of graduated to a personnel department that (has) to be good recruiters,” Notre Dame defensive coordinator Al Golden said Monday. “That transition has occurred in my three years here. They are personnel in my opinion. They’re a personnel department that has really good recruiting properties.”

While Notre Dame has yet to add to its in-season total of three transfer portal departures, its fellow entrants in the 12-team playoff field are dealing with a revolving-door effect.

Arizona State (12), Tennessee (11), Texas (nine), Georgia (eight) and Boise State (eight) have all suffered significant roster attrition ahead of the CFP. Indiana has lost seven to the portal, most recently former North Carolina running back transfer Elijah Green.

Green, a lightly used reserve, is a former high school teammate of former Notre Dame linebacker and team captain JD Bertrand.

Meanwhile, Oregon and Ohio State each have six players in the portal, while the losses are lighter for Penn State (four), Southern Methodist (three) and Clemson (three).
