One of the biggest things that new Jacksonville State football coach Charles Kelly will bring to the Gamecocks will be his recruiting prowess.
Kelly has become known as one of the top recruiters in the nation helping Auburn land two of its Class of 2025 prizes in Anquon Fegans and Derick Smith. He also helped Alabama land plenty of big fish when worked with the Crimson Tide from 2019-2022.
While recruiting will look different at Jax State, where he won’t be fighting for five stars and have a wealth of NIL money to sway players, he still thinks that Jax State has a lot to sell, and that starts with the stadium he was overlooking during his first press conference with local media.

“Jacksonville has all the resources that we need. I mean I’m looking at this stadium right now, there’s no more beautiful setting in college football. In fact, it reminds me a little bit looking out seeing the foothills, not as big but it reminds me of the mountains of Colorado when you look out through their stadium,” Kelly said.
Like under Rodriguez and past coaches, the Jacksonville State football recruiting strategy will start with the State of Alabama. It’s an area Kelly knows well growing up in it and taking two stints at Alabama high schools.
“The state of Alabama will be very important to us. The radius around Jacksonville State, the way that I look about is a five hour radius. There’s enough football players in a five hour radius that you can stay in a vehicle and get those guys to campus, that’s critical,” Kelly said. “I have a lot of respect for the coaches in the state of Alabama, all over the state.
