SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Matt Millen was the Penn State MVP of the 1977 Fiesta Bowl after he made 18 tackles in a 42-30 victory over Arizona State.
Forty-seven years later, Millen is back in the Phoenix area covering Tuesday night’s College Football Playoff quarterfinal between the Nittany Lions and Boise State for the Big Ten Network.
The assignment is giving the former All-American defensive tackle and four-time Super Bowl champion another television opportunity to comment on his alma mater’s football team.
“Oh, yeah, I still like it,” Millen said Sunday. “It’s fun for me. I keep up with it. It’s always been fun for me.”
The former Whitehall High School star commented on many Nittany Lions topics during an interview with several Penn State beat writers.
On the offensive line: “This is the best one that I’ve seen probably in at least the last decade. They’re doing a really good job. And it’s cohesive. They’re all on the same page. I like to watch footwork with offensive linemen. When you see an offensive line all taking the same steps the right way, that’s a huge sign. That’s exactly what this group does.”
On center and Parkland grad Nick Dawkins: “The center is the brain of everything. So what he calls out and how they’re attacking makes a big difference.”
On whether Penn State is a championship contender: “I’ll tell you after this game and here’s the reason why: fundamentals. Great teams are fundamentally sound all the time. On the defensive side of the ball, it’s tackling. Your head’s on the right side of the ball. You’re running through things. You’re maintaining discipline of scheme, which is going to be huge in this game.”
