Marcus Freeman Ohio State connections: Looking back on Notre Dame coach’s history

Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame football pulled off an upset when they defeated No. 2 Georgia 23-10 in the Sugar Bowl on Thursday. There’s also a chance he takes on his alma mater in the national championship game.

Freeman needs a win over No. 6 Penn State in the Orange Bowl and an Ohio State win over Texas in the Cotton Bowl to face the school he played at from 2004-08 in the national title. The 38-year-old has, of course, already lost to Ohio State twice in his four seasons as head coach.

Freeman has been successful in his time with the Fighting Irish, leading them to 32-9 record in his four seasons, winning four bowl games, including two in 2024.

The former Buckeyes linebacker started 37 games in his four-year career, being named to two All-Big Ten second teams. He was then drafted in the fifth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.

Freeman has much to credit in his career to Ohio State, as it was there the standout linebacker was a two-time second-team All-Big Ten selection, ultimately getting drafted into the NFL.

Freeman didn’t have much NFL success. He did, however, actually start his coaching journey with the Buckeyes.

The 38-year-old Notre Dame coach’s first coaching gig was as an Ohio State graduate assistant in 2010, before becoming the linebackers coach at Kent State the following season. Freeman then spent time at Purdue before being hired as Cincinnati’s defensive…
