Michigan football continues to rebuild DL adding Clemson transfer Tre Williams

Michigan football knows it’s losing a lot of depth from its defensive line and now it’s building it back up in the transfer portal.

Tre Williams, a 6-foot-2, 315-pound defensive tackle who spent the past five years at Clemson will spend the next year in Ann Arbor per reports, which will be his final season of eligibility.

Williams, ranked the No. 10 defensive lineman and No. 104 overall player in the portal per the 247 Sports composite rankings, recorded 14 tackles, three for loss and two sacks in 14 games this season.

Clemson defensive tackle Tre Williams (8) walks onto the field prior to the game against Georgia at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Aug. 31, 2024 in Atlanta.

Williams, from Washington D.C. (St. John’s), for his Clemson career recorded 42 tackles, 10 for loss, with four sacks and three fumble recoveries.

The move adds much needed depth to defensive coordinator Wink Martindale’s unit in the front, which loses a pair of projected first-round NFL selections in Mason Graham and Kenneth Grant as well as the team’s most effective edge rusher, projected Day 2 pick Josaiah Stewart.

Defensive line coach Lou Esposito was in charge of the best unit on the team in 2024, and though it loses as much as any defensive line in the country, U-M’s returns proven pieces in Derick Moore and Rayshaun Benny.

Williams, the No. 94 overall prospect in the 2020 recruiting class according to 247 Sports composite rankings, is a boost. It also marks the second day in a row the Wolverines landed a transfer after Friday’s addition of Alabama running back Justice Haynes.
