Former SDSU QB Mark Gronowski commits to Iowa for final season of college football

Jan. 7—BROOKINGS — Former South Dakota State national championship-winning quarterback Mark Gronowski committed to playing college football at the University of Iowa on Tuesday.

Gronowski, who was weighing potentially getting in the NFL Draft after four seasons at SDSU, will have one year of eligibility remaining.

A native of Illinois, Gronowski led South Dakota State to FCS titles in back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023. Those seasons included a 29-game win streak, which ironically started after a 7-3 Jackrabbit loss at Iowa where Gronowski was the starting QB.

In 2023, he won the Walter Payton Award, which honors the top FCS offensive player. In his career, Gronowski has completed 64 percent of his passes for 10,309 yards and 93 touchdowns against 20 interceptions. On the ground, he ran for 1,767 yards and 37 touchdowns.

Gronowski got into the transfer portal earlier this month, telling ESPN he was trying to weigh all options for his career.

“I’m confident in what I can do in the NFL. If there’s opportunities that help my family, I’ll change my mind. It’s doing what’s best for me and my long-term interest overall,” he said.

Gronowski indicated prior to the end of the 2024 season that it would be his last for the Jacks but his transfer continues a busy few weeks of transactions for SDSU. Teammate and defensive lineman Bryce Hawthorne announced recently he was transferring from SDSU to Iowa. Wide receiver Griffin Wilde has transferred to the Big Ten, as well, joining Northwestern, while more than 10 former Jackrabbit players and 2025 recruiting class signees have committed to transferring to Washington…
