Huskers in recruiting battle for portal offensive tackle

New Mexico State Aggies offensive tackle Shiyazh Pete (71) celebrates the game sealing touchdown as Auburn Tigers take on New Mexico State Aggies at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Nov. 18, 2023.

Nebraska football is battling with the Michigan Wolverines for one of the top offensive tackles in the portal. Shiyazh Pete is being sought after between the two schools, according to a report from On3’s Pete Nakos.

The lineman would bring additional experience to the Huskers’ offensive line. He played over 1,800 snaps for the New Mexico State Aggies in three years and was a 2023 All-Conference USA First-Team selection. He did not play until week eight of the 2024 season, doing so at the left tackle spot. He measures in at six-foot-eight, 287 pounds.

Nebraska football has made it a point to revamp the offensive line and the transfer portal. They landed a commitment from Alabama offensive tackle Elijah Pritchett last week as they look to replace players such as Bryce Benhart. The health of Turner Corcoran and Teddy Prochazka is still up in the air as well, as both players suffered season-ending injuries in 2024.

The Huskers can undoubtedly benefit from another offensive lineman, and someone of Pete’s caliber would fit the bill. The program has done a good job of identifying needs in the portal, and it will be interesting to see how this recruitment goes.
