Matthew Sluka briefly became one of the biggest names nationally in college football during the 2024 season when he left UNLV over a dispute over name, image and likeness payments, an ordeal that instantly turned him into a lightning rod in the debate over the rapidly changing college sports landscape.
Now, the quarterback has found a new home.
Four months after his much-publicized split with the Rebels, Sluka has committed to James Madison, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

The move reunites Sluka with Dukes coach Bob Chesney, who was his coach from 2020-23 at Holy Cross.
In his first and ultimately only season at UNLV, Sluka completed 43.8% of his passes for 318 yards, six touchdowns and one interception, along with 253 rushing yards and a touchdown.
After helping lead the Rebels to a 3-0 start and a No. 23 ranking in the US LBM Coaches Poll, Sluka announced that he would be sitting out the remainder of the season, noting that UNLV had not fulfilled “commitments” it had made to him when he transferred to the school from Holy Cross, where he was a two-time finalist for the Walter Payton Award (FCS player of the year).
Sluka’s father and agent said he was promised $100,000 from the Rebels, but never received a payment. UNLV said in a statement that Sluka’s agent had made “financial demands.”
“UNLV athletics interpreted these demands as a violation of the NCAA pay-for-play rules, as well as Nevada state law,” the university said. “UNLV does not engage in such activity, nor does it respond to implied threats. UNLV has honored all previously agreed-upon scholarships for Matthew Sluka.”
