New Hurricanes defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman will have the opportunity to mold his defensive staff to meet his ideas now that several assistant coaching positions have opened.
Three defensive position coaches have left since Miami fired defensive coordinator Lance Guidry on New Year’s Eve. Defensive line coach Joe Salave’a took a similar position at his alma mater, Arizona, the team announced.
Cornerbacks coach Chevis Jackson is going to Wake Forest to coach defensive backs, according to a report from 247Sports. Linebackers coach Derek Nicholson is taking the linebackers coach job at Missouri, according to multiple reports. Neither Wake Forest nor Missouri have announced the hires as of Thursday morning.
The Hurricanes still have a defensive line coach, Jason Taylor, on staff. Hetherman specializes in linebackers, having coached the position at Rutgers and Minnesota. The Hurricanes will likely need to add one or two defensive backs coaches to fill the vacancies left by Guidry and Jackson. UM could also add a coach to work with defensive tackles along with Taylor on the defensive line.
Hurricanes add Taylor Edwards to personnel department
The Hurricanes made a key move to their personnel department earlier this month, hiring Taylor Edwards to join the program in an unannounced position.
Edwards has previously worked at South Carolina, Arkansas and Alabama, among other stops. He was in line to take a position on Bill Belichick’s staff at UNC before opting to go to Coral Gables.
