Hutto athletic director and former Hippos football coach Brad LaPlante, who has worked at the school and in the school district since 2014, has left to become the athletic director for the Montgomery school district outside of Houston.
Will Compton, who has been the Hippos’ football coach for the past three years, will leave that position to become Hutto ISD’s athletic director. The search for a new head football coach has begun.
“It’s been a dream of mine to look over an entire program,” Compton said Thursday. “It happened a little earlier than I expected, but this door opened up. It seemed like a great fit for me at the time.”

LaPlante was Hutto’s head coach from 2018 to 2021, earning a 29-14 record while transitioning the team from Class 5A to Class 6A in UIL athletics.

LaPlante was Hutto’s football coach for four years before moving into the AD role. Hutto football coach Will Compton will be the new AD, and the Hippos are searching for a football coach.

Compton, 45, takes over a district that has seen tremendous growth in recent years. The city has swelled from 1,250 people in 2000 to its current population of 42,326. Hutto’s Ninth Grade Center will be turned into its second high school in 2027. Compton will oversee 16 varsity sports.
He went 13-18 in his three seasons as Hutto’s coach. His favorite memory was a winning 52-yard field goal by Tim Hollenbeck in a 24-23 victory over Converse Judson in 2022.
