Penn State ended the 2024 college football season one win shy of playing for a national championship, but the Nittany Lions will close the books on the season with the highest AP ranking for the program under head coach James Franklin. Penn State was ranked no. 5 in the final AP Top 25 poll released on Tuesday.
National champion Ohio State took the top spot and Big Ten champion ranked no. 3 in the final media poll to give the Big Ten three of the top-five teams in the poll.
Penn State also finished ranked no. 5 in the final US LBM Coaches Poll of the season. The only difference ahead of Penn State in the coaches poll was Oregon being ranked no. 4 and one spot behind Texas.
With the final AP Top 25 now on the books, Penn State’s three losses in the 2024 season ended up coming against the top-three ranked teams in the country, with each game being decided by one possession. Penn State lost to Ohio State at home during the regular season, Oregon in the Big Ten championship game (Oregon was also ranked no. 1 at the time of the game), and Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl, a College Football Playoff semifinal game.
This is the highest Penn State was ranked in the final AP Top 25 of the season since finishing the 2005 season ranked no. 3. This is Penn State’s first top-five finish under James Franklin and the fourth top-10 finish under Franklin since he was hired.
