P.J. Fleck announced that Danny Collins has been promoted to defensive coordiator
Collins is entering his 9th season with the Gophers and 13th overall with Fleck
Minnesota was 5th in total defense and 9th in scoring defense last season
MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – University of Minnesota football coach P.J. Fleck on Thursday announced changes to his defensive staff after Corey Hetherman’s departure to Miami (Florida).
Just days after signing a two-year extension with the Gophers, Hetherman left Minnesota to be the defensive coordinator for the Hurricanes. There’s a familiar face filling his role as Fleck named Danny Collins the new defensive coordinator.
Collins will also still be the safeties coach, and has been with Fleck since the 2017 season. He’s also going to remain as the defensive pass game coordinator.
“Danny has been with me since Western Michigan and is an elite defensive mind who has recruited and coached All-American players. I know he will do a tremendous job coaching and calling our defense,” Fleck said in a statement.
About Danny Collins
Why it matters: Collins is entering his ninth season with the Gophers and first running the defense. It will be his fourth coaching safeties, and 13th total with Fleck. He came to Minnesota with Fleck in 2017 and started in defensive quality control.
Collins inherits unit that finished fifth in the total defense in the nation last season, and ninth in scoring defense.
Other defensive changes
Why it matters: Mariano Sori-Marin will be the linebackers’ coach, Dennis Dottin-Carter will coach rush ends and Kevin Kane has been added to coach nickels and outside linebackers.
