Could Clemson-Notre Dame football series become a permanent rivalry?

The Clemson Tigers and Notre Dame Fighting Irish aren’t exactly bitter rivals. But two of college football’s most recognizable brands could soon be seeing a lot more of each other.

ESPN announced its decision Thursday to continue broadcasting ACC athletics through 2036 rather than exercise an opt-out clause that would have ended the broadcast rights agreement after the 2027 season. One of the key details mentioned in the initial report from ESPN’s David Hale and Andrea Adelson was how the ACC’s future could involve its relationship with Notre Dame.

The Irish are already a member of the ACC for basketball, baseball, softball, soccer and all other non-football sports. They enjoy a healthy relationship with the conference in football, typically scheduling 5-6 games against the ACC on fall Saturdays.

Last season, Notre Dame played games against Louisville, Georgia Tech, Florida State and Virginia, as well as their already established rivalry with first-year conference member Stanford. In 2025, the Irish are scheduled to face six ACC teams, including Miami and NC State.

According to Hale and Adelson’s report, Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua said he was open to the idea of playing more games against Clemson.

Doing so would be a smart move by both Clemson and Notre Dame. Here’s why.

For starters, there’s already a familiarity between the two programs. Since the 2015 football season, the Tigers and Fighting Irish have met six times on the gridiron. Some of those meetings weren’t scripted, such as the 2018 Cotton Bowl in the CFP semifinals, a 30-3 Clemson win.
