It didn’t take long for Pete Carroll to make a splash in last Vegas. His first big hire as head coach of the Raiders was a massive one, hiring away Ohio State’s Chip Kelly to be his offensive coordinator.
Kelly previously served as the head coach at both Oregon and UCLA. He took the Ducks to the national title game in 2010, and won a national championship as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator this past season.
At his introductory press conference, Kelly shared some of what went into his decision to leave Columbus for Las Vegas.
“I think sometimes as a head coach those rules turn into like a little bit of a CEO at the college level,” Kelly said. “With the advent of NIL and the transfer portal I think coaches are getting pulled in a lot of different directions and it’s away from actually coaching football. And I just really enjoy coaching football.
“So, the opportunity at Ohio State, we had an amazing experience. The fact that I could be a small part in that team winning the National Championship was really cool and having a chance to watch some players that were amazing, that persevered and showed great resiliency and get a chance to say they’re champions for the rest of their life was pretty cool. And this opportunity came up after we beat Notre Dame and I started to think about it a little bit. And so, as I said earlier, I would only go somewhere where I felt really confident in the alignment from the ownership to the personnel to the head coach. And I really felt that when I met with Pete.”
Kelly and Carroll will hope to combine their extensive football knowledge to build a winning operation in Las Vegas.
