Embracing Drew Brees’ example, Cradle of Quarterbacks legacy sets standard for new Purdue QB coach

WEST LAFAYETTE — Purdue football quarterbacks coaches must become immediately comfortable with the highest expectation.

Sounds like Darin Hinshaw moved right into that comfort zone. Taking over that position at a place with the history and audacity to call itself the “Cradle of Quarterbacks” might intimidate some coaches.

Believing Brees: Purdue football coach Barry Odom’s ‘gonna set a standard’ of accountability

Hard to run from it. The cradle lineage is posted on the room the quarterbacks use for their group meetings. It’s one of the most recognized brands associated with Boilermakers football. Its members include some of the most celebrated players of their generation.

Hinshaw, though, doubled down. He used that identity to set a standard for an almost completely turned over quarterback group. He pointed directly at the most prolific recent member of the cradle — Drew Brees — and said he expects Purdue’s quarterbacks to emulate him.

He wasn’t setting an expectation of production — though he’ll certainly take it. He was setting an expectation of mindset and accountability.

“It’s a great example of a guy that was not the best quarterback in the NFL, but he threw for more yards and more touchdowns than anybody at his time when he was playing because he outworked everybody,” Hinshaw said. “And that’s what we have to do in the quarterback room. We’re going to have to outwork everybody. That’s how I was as a player, and that’s what we’re going to instill in the quarterbacks here.”

While an assistant at Tennessee, Hinshaw attended the Saints’ organized team activities — known colloquially by their acronym, OTAs — during Brees’ playing days with the Saints. He said he followed Brees around for three days, trying to glean what made the All Pro thrive.

He watched as Brees, after practice, went back through the script…
