Penn State cutting back on offseason workouts after long 2024 season

With Penn State’s season extended a bit deeper into the sports calendar than it historically has before, head coach James Franklin says there will be some modifications made to the typical offseason workout program leading into spring football practices. Penn State’s football season has typically wrapped up at or around New Years Day over the years, but this past season saw the Nittany Lions play one week later in the College Football Playoff semifinal round, which resulted in a tough 27-24 loss to Notre Dame. Because of that extended season, the Nittany Lions will likely be cutting down the number of winter workouts for players coming back in 2025.

“I think we talked about this before—the players had about two weeks off after the season; long season,” Franklin said ina. press conference recently. “So I had two weeks off. We’re getting back into workouts now. We’ll get ready to get started with winter workouts here pretty soon, which is our morning mat workouts.”

So how many of those typical winter workouts will be cut from the schedule? According to Franklin, players may go through as many as four fewer workouts this winter.

“[We] typically have anywhere between eight to 10. Again, based on the schedule, we’ll probably have six of those this year,” Franklin explained. “We have to make modifications based on the calendar and how long we played into the season.”

In addition to playing three games in the College Football Playoff, the Nittany Lions also played an extra game in the regular season by appearing in the Big Ten championship game. In total, Penn State played in 16 games, the most in a single season in school history. Penn State’s bye weeks came in mid-September and mid-October, and there was one week off between the Big Ten championship game and the first round of the College Football Playoff. The extra rest…
