Jax State football: Gamecocks land Maryland defensive coordinator to run defense

Jacksonville State has hired former Maryland defensive coordinator Brian Williams to serve in that capacity for the Gamecocks.

The university made the announcement on social media Monday afternoon.

New Jax State head coach Charles Kelly had hired Vinnie Sunseri as defensive coordinator last month, but he left after three weeks to serve as co-defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Florida.

Williams was hired in 2019 by Maryland head coach Michael Locksley as outside linebackers coach. He moved to defensive line in 2020, and the following year, he added co-defensive coordinator to his responsibilities. In 2022, he took over at defensive coordinator while still handling the defensive line.

Under Williams’ guidance, Maryland ranked 16th out of 18 Big Ten teams in 2024 in total defense, 17th in scoring defense and 18th in sacks. In 2023, however, Maryland was eight in the Big Ten in total defense and 39th nationally.

He has worked with Kelly previously. In 2013-14 when Kelly was an assistant coach at Florida State, Williams was a defensive analyst. In 1999-2012, Williams coached at several Florida high schools.
