Elson moves into D-coordinator role for Mallory’s ISU staff

With the departure of longtime assistant coach Brad Wilson, Indiana State football head coach Curt Mallory is moving newly hired David Elson into the Sycamores’ defensive coordinator role for the 2025 college season.

Mallory confirmed the move Wednesday morning.

Wilson — who’s served as defensive coordinator and secondary coach on Mallory’s staff since 2017 — has taken a position at South Florida under Bulls coach Alex Golesh. Wilson also handled assistant head-coaching duties for the Sycamores.

Now Elson, who joined Mallory’s staff earlier this month, will guide the ISU defense.

Elson is one of several newcomers to the staff, along with John Bear (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks), Jalen Banks (running backs), Tito Overton (wide receivers) and Austin Flyger (defensive line).

Elson came to ISU after two seasons at Wake Forest, where he served as the Demon Deacons’ defensive analyst.

Elson’s experience includes seven seasons as Western Kentucky’s head coach. His Hilltopper teams posted a cumulative record of 39-43 from 2003 to 2009. In his first four seasons at WKU, the Hilltoppers competed in the Gateway Conference, as did Indiana State, and Western Kentucky finished among the league’s top four teams each year, making the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs twice.

During his career, Elson has served as defensive coordinator at Western Kentucky, Western Illinois, Southern Illinois and New Mexico State. He also spent one season as a defensive quality control staffer at Indiana.
