After a disastrous 2024 season that was largely due to incompetence on the offensive side of the football, Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables knew he needed to make some changes.
The co-offensive coordinator trio of Seth Littrell, Joe Jon Finley and Kevin Johns no longer has control of the offense. Littrell was fired seven games into the season because of the offense’s poor performance. Finley took over play-calling duties after Littrell’s dismissal and is still on staff, but he’ll no longer call plays or be a co-offensive coordinator. He’ll go back to solely coaching the tight ends. Johns stepped in after Littrell was let go to replace him as the quarterbacks coach, and he was hired by Oklahoma State for that exact role after this season.
Taking full control of the offense is Ben Arbuckle. He’ll be the offensive coordinator, the quarterbacks coach, and the play-caller. He brought along John Kuceyeski to be his senior offensive analyst and assistant quarterbacks coach and retained wide receivers coach/pass game coordinator Emmett Jones, offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, running backs coach DeMarco Murray, and, of course, Finley. But after OU’s assistant director of player personnel, J.P. Losman, departed from the support staff to take an on-field role at Washington, there was another opening on the staff that needed to be filled.
So, the Sooners added to their offensive staff by way of former offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson earlier this week. Wilson will serve as an offensive analyst, and he brings a rich background in offense to the role. He was OU’s co-offensive coordinator from 2002 to 2010 and the primary play-caller from 2006 to 2010, when he replaced Chuck Long. He was at the controls of Oklahoma’s historic 2008 offense.
