Giants hire Ladell Betts as RBs coach

The Giants hired Ladell Betts as their new running backs coach, they announced Monday evening. New York replaces Joel Thomas, who reportedly left last week for the same job with the New Orleans Saints.

Betts, 45, was the University of Iowa’s running backs coach since 2021. He was a record-setting running back for the Hawkeyes from 1997-01 before becoming a second-round pick in the 2002 NFL Draft.

His playing career spanned nine seasons with Washington (2002-09) and New Orleans (2010). In 111 games, Betts totaled 821 rushes for 3,326 yards and 15 touchdowns while adding three receiving scores and 1,646 yards on 188 catches.

At Iowa, Betts coached All-American Kaleb Johnson, who rushed 508 times for 2,779 yards and 30 touchdowns in 35 games from 2022-24. Johnson was the 2024 Big Ten Ameche-Dayne Running Back of the Year after taking 240 rushes for 1,537 yards and 21 touchdowns in 12 games.

Prior to Iowa, Betts was the head football coach at Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Pine Crest High School from 2019-20. Initially, he was Pine Crest’s offensive coordinator from 2016-18.

Betts got into coaching as a running backs coach at Coral Springs (Fla.) Christian Academy in 2013. He was Boca Raton (Fla.) High School’s offensive coordinator from 2014-15.
