Purdue football running backs led by Devin Mockobee, but have help behind him

WEST LAFAYETTE — With all the Purdue football turnover, there’s still some familiar names and faces.

One being running back Devin Mockobee, who has become the face of the Boilers.

Another, Mockobee’s position coach Lamar Conard, a former Boilermaker defensive back who joined his alma mater’s coaching staff beforethe 2023 season.

When Barry Odom was hired as Purdue’s head coach in December, Conard became a holdover position coach through the transition period after Odom retained him.

Conard gets one more season with Mockobee, now a senior. Purdue also retained promising running back Jaheim Merriweather while adding to the backfield, most notably with Virginia Tech transfer Malachi Thomas.

Three questions with Purdue football running backs coach

Q: How much did the new coaching staff lean on your history of having already been here with the players. Or maybe just where to eat or where to go on campus?

A: I’ll get a question or two a day. When everyone first got here, they asked me more, but they’ve slowly acclimated. I get that from time to time, just the familiarity with the players who are returning, the campus, Indiana, just the general landscape.

Purdue Boilermakers running back Jaheim Merriweather (3) rushes the ball Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, during the NCAA football game against the Penn State Nittany Lions at Ross-Ade Stadium in West Lafayette, Ind. Penn State Nittany Lions won 49-10.

Q: You return Jaheim Merriweather and added Malachi Thomas to the backfield. What do they add?

A: I expect big things from Jaheim. Physical traits are unbelievable. He has the tools. Really, the ball is in his court to do things the way we want him to do it and do them…
