Auburn football coach Hugh Freeze was diagnosed with prostate cancer recently, the program announced Friday via social media.
Freeze, entering his third season with the Tigers, is expected to make a full recovery and continue coaching through the 2025 season, per the team’s announcement.
“Thankfully, it was detected early and his doctors have advised that it is very treatable and curable,” Auburn’s post read. “He will continue his normal coaching duties and responsibilities, and with forthcoming proper treatment, is expected to make a full recovery. Coach Freeze is incredibly appreciative of our medical professionals and has asked that we use his experience as a reminder of the importance of prioritizing and scheduling annual health screenings.”
The 55-year-old coach is coming off back-to-back seven-loss seasons, compiling an 11-14 record in his two seasons with the Tigers.
Freeze and the Tigers pulled in one of the best recruiting classes in college football for the 2025 season, hauling in the No. 7-ranked high school class, according to 247Sports’ Composite rankings. Auburn also had the No. 8-ranked transfer portal class, headlined by Georgia Tech receiver Eric Singleton Jr. and new starting quarterback Jackson Arnold from Oklahoma.
