LSU football, yet again, is looking for a new defensive line coach. The New Orleans Saints hired Bo Davis, LSU’s 2024 defensive line coach, to lead the DL in New Orleans.
Davis was among the highest paid assistant coaches in college football — and for good reason. He recruited and developed at an elite level. Where Davis went, wins followed. He was a member of Nick Saban’s first national championship staff at LSU and later joined Saban at Alabama. He was a critical piece of Steve Sarkisian’s rebuild at Texas, developing one of the best defensive tackle tandems in the country and earning the Longhorns’ first playoff berth.
Through Davis’ years at Alabama and Texas, there was always speculation about a return to LSU. Brian Kelly finally made it happen in 2024, but after one season, Davis is off to the NFL.
Davis’ departure follows a trend of top-level assistants leaving for the professional ranks. NFL coaches don’t have to worry about recruiting or the transfer portal. Some view that as a higher quality of life.
As usual, LSU’s coaching search will include some of the top names in the sport. LSU football has never been afraid to pay-up for assistant coaches. LSU DC Blake Baker was the highest paid coordinator in the sport last year. On Thursday, LSU Wire offered 10 names to watch as Kelly searches for Davis’ replacement.

Does it impact LSU’s recruiting?
Anytime an assistant coach leaves, especially one of Davis’ caliber, there will be a recruiting fallout. This was poorly timed for LSU with the 2026 class producing several blue-chip defensive tackles in Louisiana.
