INDIANAPOLIS — Quinn Ewers was on the wrong end of Ohio State’s national championship run last month.
It was in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Cotton Bowl when Ewers dropped back to pass, looking to help Texas tie the game late in the fourth quarter.
But Ewers never attempted a pass on fourth down as defensive end Jack Sawyer swarmed the pocket and stripped the ball from his grasp.

The fumble turned into a scoop-and-score, Sawyer rumbling 83 yards into the end zone to seal the Buckeyes’ 28-14 win and pushing them into the final against Notre Dame.
As the play remains one of the most memorable moments from Ohio State’s title push, it has also been a difficult moment for Ewers to forget.
Ewers continues to hear about the sequence, including Friday at the NFL scouting combine.

“It seems like every day now,” he said, “because it was such a big play.”
Though he threw more than touchdowns than all but five quarterbacks in the Football Bowl Subdivision last season and led the Longhorns to the playoff for the second year in a row, it remains a lasting image from his college career.
“It seems like that play was our entire season,” Ewers said, “but it was a fun year and a fun three years.”
Ewers transferred to Texas after he spent a semester at Ohio State in 2021 and even roomed with Sawyer, whom he credited for making the game-clinching score.
“He got a little faster than when I was back at Ohio State,” Ewers said, “because he got up on me pretty quick. He’s a great player. He was fun to play against. He definitely made a good play.”
