John Mateer credits Cam Ward, Ben Arbuckle ahead of first OU football spring practice

NORMAN — New OU quarterback John Mateer participated in his first press conference Wednesday, the day before the Sooners open spring football practice Thursday.

Mateer threw for 3,139 yards and 29 touchdowns with seven interceptions last season and ran for 826 yards and 15 scores for Washington State.

After the season, he transferred to OU where he reunites with his Cougars’ offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle.

Pressure not a problem for John Mateer

Though Mateer is in his first offseason as a starting quarterback and now he’s doing it at a place like OU, he’s not fazed by the expectations that come along with being the starting quarterback of the Sooners.

“I don’t really think about the expectations too much,” Mateer said. “I don’t put pressure on myself.”

Mateer has embraced his role, regularly showing up to watch other sports on campus. He said he’ll be at Friday’s women’s gymnastics meet when the top-ranked Sooners take on Michigan.

“I think it’s just I have a platform to do a lot of things,” Mateer said. “… I don’t think every quarterback has to be pressured into it but I like doing it.”
