Spring football primer: Key dates, questions for Gators, Bulls, FSU

The final strands of confetti still are floating in downtown Atlanta, site of the Jan. 20 College Football Playoff national title game, yet another season already has commenced.

Time waits for no one. Evidently, neither do installs nor pass-skel drills. Spring practice for Miami kicked off Monday, and the Gators begin Thursday. Other state schools are expected to start up in the next couple of weeks in what might — just might — represent the swan song for a generation-spanning tradition embedded in the collegiate fabric.

For various reasons, many Power Four programs have canceled their spring intrasquad games, while a movement to abolish spring practice altogether in favor of an NFL-type offseason model (i.e. summer organized team activities) continues gaining traction. For those endeared to this current rite of March and April, savor it while it’s still around.

Here’s our 2025 state-wide spring primer, with some key dates, questions and quarterback situations entering the dawn of March.

Will there be a QB derby?

While every coach from Marianna to Miami will insist that competition will abound in their respective quarterback room, we can reasonably project at least four opening day starters among the state’s five most prominent programs.

Sophomore DJ Lagway is entrenched at Florida, and Boston College transfer Thomas Castellanos — a dual threat ideally suited for FSU offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn’s run-centric system — is the solid favorite in Tallahassee. Miami brought in Georgia 7,900-yard passer Carson Beck, and after an injury-besieged 2024 season USF’s Byrum Brown is back for his fourth season in Tampa.

Beck, who underwent right-elbow surgery in December, is expected to have limited participation in UM’s spring practice. USF confirmed Monday that Brown is ready to roll.
