Clemson defensive coordinator Tom Allen on Jeremiah Alexander’s position for the spring

One of the more intriguing storylines for Clemson’s defense this spring is how transfer Jeremiah Alexander will fit into the scheme. The former five-star recruit made the move from Alabama this offseason, and while his exact role remains unclear, new defensive coordinator Tom Allen has been encouraged by what he’s seen so far.

“I feel like he is a really good football player,” Allen said. “Trying to figure out where he best fits. I think that is a big goal for spring football.”

At this point, Alexander appears to be somewhat position-less, which makes it tough to determine whether that’s a promising sign or something to be concerned about. Regardless, it’s up to Dabo Swinney, Allen, and the coaching staff to guide him into the right spot.

Allen noted that Wednesday was a significant day for Alexander, as newly installed defensive packages put him in a key role. Beyond his physical skills, he’s also earning recognition for his work ethic and intelligence.

“Has a tremendous desire to want to play,” Allen said. “He is always in here doing something extra. Comes in on the weekends on his own, which is awesome to see. He is always studying film, asking really good questions. Has a good football IQ. Very strong guy and has some really good physical traits.”

Alexander primarily played special teams at Alabama, appearing in 24 games over two seasons after redshirting in 2022. But Allen sees the tools that made him such a highly regarded prospect out of high school and believes he has a bright future with the Tigers.

“I am excited about Jeremiah,” Allen said. “I think he just has to continue to work and develop. He is obviously learning a new system like all these guys are, and that will be big. His ability to transfer that to the field. A guy that is going to do great things in our…
