Arizona board tables football coach hiring, hoping old will return, leaving new in limbo

It seems like Brett Davis is pretty annoyed. And it kind of seems like he has a point.

Last season, Davis led the Tonopah Valley High School football team to a 12-1 record and a trip to the 2A semifinals, according to the Arizona Republic’s Richard Obert. Davis employed an air raid offense that produced 3,928 passing yards and 45 touchdowns.

In late January, Hathcock informed Verrado he was leaving to take the same job at Mesa High. School officials spoke with him about changing his mind, but he reaffirmed his decision. He later asked to be released from his teaching position so he could take one at Mesa, as well.

However, on Feb. 28 Hathcock reachout back out to Verrado about the possibility of returning, under certain “conditions,” one being that he wanted a “football class,” according to Obert.

District Superintendent Mark Yslas told The Republic that “I did not meet those conditions.” And Verrado decided to leave.

However, when the district board got word of the interaction it gave it hope that the popular coach might reconsider…
