Maryvale football coaches support players after fatal school stabbing

Maryvale Co-head coach Mark Carter talks to media after stabbing at HS

Maryvale high school co-head football coach Mark Carter addresses the media regarding the stabbing at the high school.

Maryvale High School football co-coaches Marus and Mark Carter spoke up Wednesday about Tuesday’s stabbing at the school, offering emotional support for their players.

According to The Arizona Republic’s Perry Vandell, the stabbing left a 16-year-old dead and another boy injured. The school was evacuated and a student was detained. The detained student, also a 16 years old, has since been charged with second-degree murder. No football players were involved.

“Our goal is to be better every day” Mark Carter said during a previously planned flag football and football media day for district schools on Wednesday. “Like Marcus said, to be a beacon in life. I spoke to the boys yesterday and told them that it’s not fair, especially for them being so young. But it’s our responsibility as a football team at Maryvale to lift the community up. We’ve got an opportunity to do something really special.”

Mark Carter said Tuesday’s team meeting was difficult but necessary.

“Being a football player at a school like this, it’s special, because we have the power to make this stuff go away,” Carter told the players. “Do good things in the community, get your grades right, win football games, go to college, give something good for people to talk about.

“If you want to be king, do what kings do. Stay safe. Protect each other at all times. Even if that means pulling someone out of a fight. I’m going to talk to the boys tonight, I’m going to tell them, that’s what we’ve got to do. Championships go in the books. But changing the community, having that as your legacy, that lasts forever.”
