Kirby Smart addresses Georgia football roles of former DCs Will Muschamp, Andrew Thacker

Georgia football brought back all 10 on-field assistant coaches from last season, but some of the support staff roles with former defensive coordinators are changing.

That could include former Bulldog co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, who was a defensive analyst last season during game weeks but was with his son, Whit, a quarterback at Vanderbilt, on Saturdays.

Muschamp, the former Florida and South Carolina coach, returned to the sideline during the SEC championship game.

So what is his role now?

“We’ll probably decide that at a later time,” coach Kirby Smart said Tuesday before Georgia opened spring practices.

Muschamp spent three seasons on staff as an assistant coach after arriving with the intention of serving in an off-field role, but that changed when assistant Scott Cochran took a leave.

Thacker, defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech from 2019 to early in the 2023 season, is coaching the nickel/Star position that co-defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson coached last season. Robinson also coaches the safeties.

Thacker is able to coach on-field in practice now under NCAA rules, even if he’s not considered one of the 10 on-field assistants.

“He’ll be with those guys, the nickels, and help coach,” Smart said. “Those guys are kind of a quasi-position now. They’re half outside linebacker, they’re half linebacker, they’re half DB, they’re a little bit safety. They’re special teams players. He’ll take on a role with those guys and spend time with them.”
