Kirby Smart addresses status of Mike Bobo

In Georgia Bulldogs football coach Kirby Smart’s opening spring practice press conference, he stood up for his coaching staff. There’s been a lot of outside noise surrounding his staff especially offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.

“Yeah, to be honest with you, I don’t get into it much,” Smart said. “I worked in a place (Alabama) for ten years before I came here, and it’s my 10th spring, so that’s 20 years that I really don’t pay much attention to anything outside. I’ve got a lot of confidence in this organization, the foundation we’ve built. I’ve got the best staff in the country, and I have no doubt about that. I’ve got one of the most experienced SEC staffs there is, and to be honest with you, there’s a lot of confidence in that. I have a lot of confidence in that.”

Smart’s quote makes it clear that he is confident in his coaching staff and that offensive coordinator Mike Bobo is not going anywhere despite a down 2024 season.

Last season, Georgia’s offense consistently struggled to start games, averaging under five points in the first quarter and less than 13 points in the first half. Despite injuries and turnovers, their run game was a persistent issue, ranking 11th in the SEC for yards per carry and representing the program’s lowest output under head coach Kirby Smart. Their 4.06 yards per carry average was a significant drop, more than half a yard lower than Smart’s first season at the helm.

This season will be crucial to see if his coaching staff, especially offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, is the best in country. Georgia’s development and scheme will be key to ensure the offense’s success in 2025. Georgia is breaking in a first-year starting quarterback, four new starting offensive lineman, and a very different wide receiver room.
